Anti corruption cartoonist Aseem Trivedi jailed in Mumbai for sedition

Firstpost reports that popular Mumbai cartoonist Aseem Trivedi has been sent to judicial custody till 24 September on charges of sedition, which is a non-bailable offence.

“The cartoons by Trivedi depicted Parliament as a commode and showed the national emblem with wolves instead of lions. The cartoons were obviously aimed at creating unrest in the society,” C Bhosale, senior inspector of police is quoted in hindustantimes.

However Justice Markandey Katju, Press Council of India chairman, defended Aseem Trivedi.

“My opinion is that the cartoonist did nothing illegal. In a democracy many things are said, some truthful and others false,” Katju said in a statement quoted in dnaindia.
